Much About Hotels

Any seasoned traveler will have a few anecdotes about hotels they'd rather forget along with hotels that merit raving endorsements.  Whether I'm a seasoned traveler might be debated, but I can say that I've hopped around the world a little. Here are a couple of my hotel experiences.

Many years ago, my wife and I were traveling in Europe for the first time on a very limited budget.  Before arriving in Paris we had made reservations at a Left Bank hotel based solely on price and a description that at least gave it decent marks.  Needless to say, when we arrived, we were struck with how awfully shop worn it seemed.  Nonetheless, we decided to remain, given our limited finances.

So, while not exactly comfortable with our surroundings, we made do in this hotel for a few days while, of course, really enjoying Paris.  On departure, we looked around the room to make sure we weren't leaving anything and I lifted the bed cover to look beneath.  Well, the dust was at least an inch thick, and I could observe the skeleton of a creature about the size of a rat.

Contrast that with the Rambagh Palace, a five star hotel in Jaipur, India pictured here to the left.  It's the most sumptuous hotel I've ever known.  Mind you, I'm just an everyday Joe sort of traveler, hardly a denizen of penthouse suites - a Best Western kind of guy. I've enjoyed sojourning in a number of four and five star hotels in India (since by and large they're affordable).  Without a doubt, however, the Rambagh is a cut above.

The Rambagh Palace Hotel is an intriguing and inviting looking building set on 47 acres of gardens. It's the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The appointments in my room definitely conveyed a sense of living like a Raja, and the service catered ever so graciously to every whim. Should you land someday in Jaipur, you'll know where to stay.

Naturally, since hotels are so ubiquitous, it's impossible for any one website to cover all that all that's woven into the worldwide hotel landscape. Here, you'll find a series of articles discussing just a few of the more well known hotels and chains around the world, along with a few tips on hotel selection and the like.
